Welp, we finally found the usgs marker!
All of the times we have hiked to the top of Mt. Hardy, we have never been able to find the survey marker. This time, we found it. I think the trick is to be on the right trail. There are so many game trails at the top of the mountain that you may not be on the official trail when you reach the summit.
Make sure you take the trails that look the most travelled. The maker isn’t at the summit, either. It is practically on top of the trail before you ever get to the summit. It is up on a rock that is about 2 – 2 1/2 feet high just to the right as you are coming out of the section closed in by shoulder high weeds. There are blueberry bushes on either side of the rock. It is before you get to the clearing near the top. The actual summit is further on past the marker and past the overlook like clearing.
